RESEARCH INTERESTS:
- Origins of Life – Laboratory
simulations of the possible role of phosphate and sulfur compounds in
energy storage on the early Earth.
NASA funding has been available (1998-2005) to support at least two
undergraduate assistants during the summer sessions, but students may
prefer to register for credit (CHM 400).
- Magnetic Resonance – The College
has received a three-year grant (2003-6) from the National Science Foundation to upgrade our “NMR” instrument. With Drs. Strazza and Cooley, we have
developed new instructional methods to strengthen undergraduate training
in this essential technology. Please
download a procedure created here for the measurement of relaxation times.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES:
- Associate
Scientist within the New York Center for Studies on the Origins of Life, a $6 million NASA Consortium with Rensselaer
and the University at Albany.
- Member
of the Editorial Board of Origins of
Life and Evolution of the Biospheres.
- American
Chemical Society – Past Chair of the Eastern New York Section (Certificate
of Excellence for 1997) and symposium co-organizer for "The Chemistry
of the Origins of Life" at the ACS Regional Meeting (June 16, 2003)
in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
TEACHING AREAS:
- Science
and Society (CHM 103)
- Organic
Chemistry (CHM 201-202)
- Advanced
Organic Chemistry (CHM 321)
- Instrumental
Analysis (CHM 301)
- Synthesis
and Characterization (CHM 306)
