Program Objectives

Students will be able to:

1. Apply critical thinking skills within the context of professional social work practice (Reflective of Goal #1);

2. Practice within the values and ethics of the social work profession and with understanding of and respect for the positive value of diversity (Reflective of Goal #3 and #4);

3. Demonstrate the professional use of self (Reflective of Goals #1, #3, and #4);

4. Understand the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination and the strategies of change that advance social and economic justice (Reflective of Goals #1 and #4);

5. Understand the history of the social work profession and its current structures and issues (Reflective of Goal #1);

6. Apply the knowledge and skills of generalist social work to practice with systems of all sizes (Reflective of Goals #1 and #2);

7. Apply knowledge of bio-psycho-social variables that affect individual development and behavior, and use theoretical frameworks to understand the interactions among individuals and between individuals and social systems (i.e., families, groups, organizations, and communities) (Reflective of Goals #1, #2, and #3);

8. Analyze the impact of social policies on client systems, workers, and agencies (Reflective of Goals #1, #2, and #4);

9. Evaluate research studies and apply findings to practice, and, under supervision, to evaluate their own practice interventions and those of other relevant systems (Reflective of Goals #1, #2, and #3);

10. Use communications skills differentially with a variety of client populations, colleagues, and members of the community (Reflective of Goals #1, #2, #3, and #4);

11. Use supervision appropriate to generalist practice (Reflective of Goals #1 and #2);

12. Function within the structure of organizations and service delivery systems, and under supervision, seek necessary organizational change (Reflective of Goals #1 and #2);

13. Contribute to professional development and leadership by way of conducting workshops or presentations in the social work community(Reflective of Goal #5);

14. The Program will implement, endorse, or collaborate on a variety of programmatic opportunities and events, open to the broader College and local community, that deliver content within the social work perspective.
