Accounting and
Business Administration

At Saint Rose, our business programs teach you more than just business—they teach you lifelong career skills. Whether you choose to major in accounting or business administration, you will learn the verbal and written communication skills that will help you in the business world. Our faculty share with their students “real world” work experience, not just book knowledge. Applied work in the advanced business classes will enable you to develop a portfolio of financial plans and business presentations, so that when you earn your degree, you will have all the tools you need to become a business professional.

THE SAINT ROSE DIFFERENCE
Business Administration
The business administration program is designed to prepare students to be the business leaders of the 21st century. Through the business core curriculum, you will study the various areas of business before deciding on a specialty. Concentrations include:

  • finance
  • information technology (IT) management
  • marketing
  • managerial accounting
  • management of human resources
  • small business and entrepreneurship
  • sport management
  • taxation

The Saint Rose School of Business recently introduced new concentrations in information technology (IT) management and sport management.

IT Management
The Saint Rose concentration in IT management will prepare you for the world of e-commerce. This concentration is designed for business majors who are skilled in technology and interested in a career fostering valuable relationships between IT employees and management, as managers of information technology.

Sport Management
The new concentration in sport management will train you for making educated decisions in the multi-billion dollar athletic industry. This curriculum enables you to gain the financial management, human relations and marketing skills needed to work successfully within a host of sports organizations or athletic departments.

B.S./M.B.A.
Saint Rose business administration majors have the option of completing both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in about five years through the College’s combined BS/MBA program.

Accounting
The accounting major is designed to prepare you for positions in accounting, auditing, tax work, budgeting, systems design and analysis, and cost control. This program is officially approved by the New York State Education Department’s Board of Public Accountancy and qualifies you
to take the New York state examination for Certified Public Accountants.

BS/M.S. Option in Accounting
The combined BS/MS option in accounting allows students to earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in accounting in five years.

Delta Mu Delta
Saint Rose has a chapter of Delta Mu Delta, the national honor society for business majors who excel in their field of study.

American Marketing Association Club
The student-run American Marketing Association (AMA) sponsors many events, including co-hosting a basketball tournament with the Albany YMCA to benefit the YMCA’s after-school youth leadership program. Members of the Saint Rose chapter also attend programs sponsored by the Capital Region Chapter of the AMA on topics such as direct mail marketing, not-for-profit marketing, how to write creative copy, and crisis management in business.

The Peter M. Tully Endowed Lecture on Financial Services and Economic Development
Peter M. Tully served as former senior vice president of municipal finance for First Albany Corp. and was an authority on tax-exempt bonds until his death in December 1997. In his memory, First Albany has established an annual lecture attended by business and government administrators that features an address by a prominent business leader. Former keynote speakers for this lecture include William J. McDonough, president and chief executive officer of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and Mary C. Farrell, managing director of Paine-Webber Incorporated.

OUR PROFESSIONAL FACULTY
In the Saint Rose School of Business, your education will never be in the hands of a teaching assistant—all business classes are taught by faculty members who have experience in the private sector and bring that perspective into their classes. Many also do pro bono consulting work with area small businesses and startup companies, enabling their students to gain experience in establishing community-based companies. In addition, 100% of the business administration faculty hold doctorates or are doctoral candidates and 100% of the accounting faculty are CPAs.

FIELD EXPERIENCE
The Saint Rose School of Business guarantees that all qualified students who want an internship will be placed with a company or organization that matches their interests and where they will do meaningful work related to their major and concentration.

What it’s all about to me as a
prospective employer is finding students who are very well-rounded, students who know how to lead busy, but balanced lives. The graduates that we get from Saint Rose fit very well into our family. They’re balanced, they’re serious, they’re hard working, they know how to organize themselves, and many of them have volunteered in the community. The students who come to us from Saint Rose, in our estimation, are clearly the top of the class. It’s not surprising to me that Saint Rose graduates function so well at big, sophisticated companies, because that’s the difference in the Saint Rose experience… This place is distinguished, it’s unique.

senior vice president, The Ayco Company, L.P., New York City

ACCREDITATION
All of the College’s business programs are nationally accredited by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs, a distinction that has been awarded to just one other four-year college in the Capital Region.

In my opinion, there are two
aspects that you need as an
individual to be successful—
you have to have technical skills and you have to be able to communicate effectively. I can tell you that I didn't come to Saint Rose with those polished skills, but I left with them because that is what the Saint Rose business faculty is able to do through mentoring and being accessible to students. I can name every single individual business professor I had and the quality that I gained from them.

Ryan Halliday, '99,
financial analyst, The Ayco Company, Michigan
