Professor Ellen Cong Zhang received her M. A. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and her Ph. D. from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2003. She specializes in the social and cultural history of imperial China, with an emphasis on the literati, travel culture, cultural geography, women and gender, and the formation of local identity. She offers introductory courses in East Asian civilization, the history of China and Japan, and a variety of advanced courses. Before coming to the United States in 1995, she taught U. S. history and women's history at Nankai University. She is currently a member of the American Historical Association and the Association for Asian Studies.
